The Fern Street Community Kitchen, founded in 2012, is operated by the Universalist Church of West Hartford with support from Foodshare, local merchants, and hundreds of local volunteers.
Our programs include:
Foodshare Mobile Pantry - Host Site
With the help of dedicated volunteers who work in every kind of weather, we distribute food to an average of 150 people every other Monday.
Community Kitchen Breakfasts
We serve a free hot breakfast twice a month, in conjunction with the Foodshare mobile pantry. This lively meal in our fellowship hall has become a popular place for our neighbors to congregate with friends. We supplement the Foodshare mobile pantry with free bread and bakery items donated by local grocers and restaurants.
Fern Street Food Pantry
Our newest program launched in 2016. On the third Saturday each month, we distribute non-perishables, fresh produce, frozen meats, and eggs to qualified recipients. As we near our first anniversary, we've distributed 3.5 tons of food.
Weekend Food Backpack Program
Every week during the school year, we supply backpacks filled with nourishing, easy-to-prepare food to at-risk students in the West Hartford school system. We're currently serving 52 students across 7 schools.
"Have a Heart" Sandwiches for the Homeless
For more years than any of us can remember, we've been making sandwiches for the homeless in a longstanding partnership with the House of Bread.
The Fern Street Community Kitchen budget is independent of the Universalist Church. We rely 100% on the generosity of our donors and grants. Your support is critical to our continued operations. Thank you!
